Gugamal National Park is
a
part of the famous Melghat Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra. It forms the
core part of the Tiger reserve and covers around 1673.93 sq km (square
kilometers). The park is located in the Chikhaldara and Dharni Tehsils
of Amaravati District, Maharashtra.
The Gugamal National Park was
constituted as a national park in 1974 to protect and conserve the
tiger habitat. The entire area is significant for ecology, flora and
fauna. It is home to the endangered tiger and other wild mammals like
panther, sloth bear, wild dog, jackal, hyena, chausinga, sambar, gaur,
barking deer, ratel, flying squirrel, cheetal , nilgai, wild boar,
langur, rhesus monkey, and macaque.
The forest is typically dry
deciduous; bamboo and teak are the predominant tree species. The
vegetation in the national park is quite varied and it has around 90
tree species, 66 shrub species, 316 herb species, 56 climbers, 23 sedge
species and 99 grass species. It is notable that the area is rich in
medicinal plants.
The best time to visit the Gugamal
National Park is October to June.
The Korku tribe, of forest dwellers,
are found in the Melghat region. The members of this tribe speak a
dialect known as ‘Korku’. Visitors can interact with the tribes and
study their culture. This tribe celebrates a harvest festival known as
Karam, during which they take part in several folk dances and songs.
The tribe has two traditional dance forms, Chattkore and Bhavai.
